Author Profile

Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic who is widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian era. He was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, England, and was the second of eight children. His father, John Dickens, was a naval clerk who struggled with debt, and his mother, Elizabeth Dickens, was a homemaker.
Dickens had a difficult childhood, as his family's financial struggles forced him to leave school at the age of 12 and work in a factory. He later became a law clerk and a journalist, and began writing fiction in his spare time. His first novel, The Pickwick Papers, was published in 1836 and was an immediate success.
Over the course of his career, Dickens wrote many of the most beloved and enduring works of English literature, including Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, and A Tale of Two Cities. His novels often dealt with social issues such as poverty, injustice, and class inequality, and he was a passionate advocate for social reform.
