The Brothers Grimm

Author Profile

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, were German academics and authors who are best known for their collection of fairy tales, Household Tales, which has become a classic of children's literature.

Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm was born on January 4, 1785, in Hanau, Germany, while his younger brother Wilhelm Carl Grimm was born on February 24, 1786.

They were the eldest surviving children of Philipp Wilhelm Grimm, a lawyer, and his wife Dorothea Grimm. The brothers grew up in a large family and were educated at home by their mother and later attended the University of Marburg, where they studied law, history, and literature.

In 1806, the brothers began collecting and studying folk tales and legends from various regions of Germany. They published their first collection of fairy tales in 1812 under the title Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children's and Household Tales), which included stories such as "Cinderella," "Little Red Riding Hood," and "Hansel and Gretel."
